Routledge Companion to Remix Studies 2nd Edition Book Cover

Our new book is out! We started working on this huge project back in 2022 and after a lot of hard work co-editing and writing with my friends and colleagues Eduardo Navas and xtine burrough, and our 50+ contributors, the 2nd edition of The Routledge Companion to Remix Studies, updated and revised for the age of AI, is officially published!

More details here: https://www.routledge.com/The-Routledge-Companion-to-Remix-Studies/Navas-Gallagher-burrough/p/book/9781032509105

Can NFTs be Remixed?

A very interesting article on remixing artistic NFTs using AllchemyNFT by Victor Zhang.

1_k3p0dw_jl6_tkuj5okummq

“The word “remix” first appeared at the beginning of the 19th century. However, it can be argued that the concept of artistic “remix” as we know it today wasn’t really born until the second half of the 20th century when pop artists and musicians began to directly lift and repurpose pieces of each other’s work.

For example, in 1962, Andy Warhol famously cloned and colorized a photo of Marilyn Monroe; around the same time, DJs in Jamaican dance halls began deconstructing and remaking musical tracks to better suit their audience’s tastes.

Since then, technological developments have enabled creators to take the concept of the artistic remix and transform it into something new.

Musical producers sample and feature the work of other artists; visual artists copy, transform and combine other pieces of artistic work. On TikTok, users lift and reference each others’ content with alacrity. What has resulted is the creation of a collaborative, cross-cultural artistic dialogue that plays an important role in global society.

Bringing Collaboration to NFTs: Can Non-Fungible Tokens be ‘Remixed’?

When the dawn of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) brought art to the blockchain in a meaningful way, creators everywhere became excited about the opportunity to develop new income streams and relationships with their fans.

NFTs faced some initial challenges. One of the well-known benefits of blockchain is its immutability: records on a blockchain network cannot be altered without the consent of more than 50 percent of the network’s nodes. This immutability makes NFT ownership secure and indisputable. When you create, purchase, or sell an NFT, a record of that event is permanently stored in a blockchain’s public ledger.

However, this level of immutability is incompatible with the collaborative and customizable concept of the artistic “remix”: NFTs, in theory, could not be altered after they were added to a blockchain network.

Until now.”

[Pogo says...]

Please help me get 100,000 signatures by April 13th, folks!http://t.co/ikYr4LppOA

The Department Of Homeland Security has banned me from entering the USA for a period of 10 years. I was on my second tour playing live across North America, and as the agency managing my tour never even mentioned visas, I proceeded with the same Visa Waiver I had used for previous trips to the USA. The moment they heard of my arrest, the agency removed me from their client list and refused to communicate. I’ve made this video to give everyone the full story. If you have any advice or know someone who could help me out of this situation, please get in touch:

CISPA Back on the Agenda

cispa-passes-house

The latest reincarnation of SOPA, the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) has been reintroduced in the House of Representatives. This is the latest in a long line of so-called ‘anti-piracy’ laws that have the unfortunate side effect of threatening internet freedom and privacy for the majority of users. Find out more here.

From the Electronic Frontier Foundation:

Dangerous Cybersecurity Legislation Threatens Online Privacy

The Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) is back.
Last year, Representatives Rogers and Ruppersberger introduced CISPA, which would create a gaping new exemption to existing privacy law. CISPA would grant companies more power to obtain “threat” information (such as from private communications of users) and to disclose that data to the government without a warrant — including sending data to the National Security Agency.
This week, CISPA was reintroduced in the House of Representatives. EFF is joining groups like ACLU and Fight for the Future in combating this legislation.
Last year, tens of thousands of concerned individuals used the EFF action center to speak out against overbroad and ineffective cybersecurity proposals. Together, we substantially changed the debate around cybersecurity in the U.S., moving forward a range of privacy-protective amendments and ultimately helping to defeat the Senate bill.
Now we need your help again. Can you send a message to your Representatives asking them to oppose this bill?

Sound and the Story (1956)

RCA Victor presents Sound and the Story, copyright Radio Corporation of America.

A nice accompaniment to ‘In Living Stereo’ where it told of how 78′s are made, ‘The Sound And The Story’ teaches us how vinyl records are made. This is done by going step by step, by first showing us a recording being done of ‘Romeo And Juliet’ by the Boston Symphony, to the taping of it, a master being made, to dupes of the master, a mold, and then finally, the dupes of the mold. All of this is explained in a suprisingly easy and interesting way, since I’ve never been told how records are made. Another interesting point about this, is how many women they had working at the RCA shop, not just typists or what have you, but you had women working the stamping machine! All to get this record, which by the way, is a very rare (and expensive!) find nowadays.. Recommended!

Hollywood Burns (2011), soda_jerk

Loved this! If you grew up in the 80s you might recognise more than a few of the samples…

Mimicking the hyperbolic rhetoric of today’s copyright cops, Hollywood Burn pits a righteous league of video pirates against the evil tyrant Moses and his Copyright Commandments. Determined to alter the present by changing the past, the pirates travel back to 1955 to construct the ultimate weapon: an Elvis Presley video-clone. Part sci-fi + rom com + biblical epic + action movie, this remix manifesto adopts the tactical responses of the parasite, feeding off the body of Hollywood and inhabiting its cinematic structures and codes. The unwitting all-star cast includes Elvis Presley, Charlton Heston, Monkey, Batman, Bette Davis, Jaws, Jesus, The Hulk, The Hoff and the Ghostbusters.

Completed over 10 years in collaboration with artist Sam Smith, this anti-copyright epic is constructed entirely from hundreds of samples plundered from the Hollywood archive. In the spirit of free culture, Hollywood Burn is freely available to view, clone, share and screen. It can be viewed online or downloaded here. Or please get in touch if you’d like a free hi-res screener file – we only ask that audiences are never charged entry to screenings.
